Description
STILT FISHERMAN
Stilt fishing ( Ritipanna – Sinhalese Term ) is one of the most Unique and Traditional methods of fishing in Sri Lanka. This fishing form is very popular in the Southern Coastal region of Sri Lanka and have managed to become a huge tourist attraction in recent times. Prior to the tsunami of 2004, which temporarily stopped such activities, this method of fishing was more extensively employed all along the coast.
Stilt Fishing requires high level of balancing and control, On a riverbank or in the shallows of the sea, a vertical pole with an attached crossbar is planted. The crossbar enables the fishermen to sit a few meters above the water, minimizing shadows on the water and, as a result, little to no disturbance to the marine life.
The stilt fisherman then use a rod from this dangerous position to catch a good catch of spotted herrings and small mackerels from the relatively shallow waters of the sea or from the river. Once they grab their catch they quickly put it in a bag that is attached to the pole or to their waist.
