Mara also known as big-leaf mahogany, is a tree species found in Western South America. Growing up to 50 meters (165 feet) tall, this tree produces a long straight bole and when polished it takes on a gold luster. Sri Lankan craftsman use Mara to show their exquisite work and the richness of the wood. These wooden carved elephants come in magnificent designs and poses and is lacquered and smoothened according to the wood.
